How to Avoid Getting Ripped Off When Buying Used Cars in Online Auctions

By Ted Nash

Buying a Used Car Online whether on eBay or other auction sites can have the potential to get an incredible bargain. It can also have the potential to get you a sour lemon of a used car.  It is always recommended to go and see the car in person first, but sometime that is just not possible and you will have to buy the used car site unseen. These are the top five things you can to to maximize your chances of getting a good car.

  1. Make sure you have good telephone rapport with the owner. Your conversation should be comfortable and you should be able to speak like old friends. You should be able to speak about things other than just the car you are buying. You will find that if you have common interests then maybe you have a similar philosophy for taking care of cares

  2. Ask the owner why he is selling the car. He should have a good answer ready. If he stumbles on his answer or is not clear, then it is most likely that he is selling because there are some difficult mechanical issues

  3. Speak Multiple times to the owner on the telephone and ask the same question in different ways.  We will do this to see if he is changing his story.  Remember that liars often forget their lies, but people that tell the truth always say the same thing

  4. Check the car on CarFax. This is a service that for a small fee allows you to see the accident history and other records for the car. So you know where it has been. Use this information to further probe the owner

  5. Do extensive research online on this particular make and model of car.  Kelly Blue Book is a great place to start and looking around you will find numerous forums and wiki articles dedicated to your make and model of car so you can get an idea of the tendencies.
